No wonder I'm such a science hermit

The Lord of the Rings features characters of diverse backgrounds working together toward a common goal. And to most moviegoers, it's about the best thing ever.

:Query:

If America can love a story about the exploits of little people, homosexuals, old people, and the overweight, why can't we show these same real life groups any respect?

:Statement:

Even those with nothing to recommend them sport with the dignity of those who differ from the norm. The first skill learned by those with a lack of discernible talent is deflection; ridiculing another to ensure their own safe passage through society.

:Hypothesis:

Overextend yourself to come to the defense of your fellow (wo)man. After all, their rights are your rights; never feel safe just because your personal deviance from the accepted has not been exposed yet. (Mine is a penchant for loud funk music combined with an irresistible urge to copy Nicholas brothers dance numbers.) Ask yourself why you accept a thing while your disbelief is suspended, but not when you're headed to the grocery store.

I personally find it hilarious the number of black men(connected to white women) who erupt in epithets at the mention of gay marriage but do not know the word miscegenation.
