Ideas

:Professor Soul - login *****:

In the pursuit of scientific discovery, data is logged, variables are tested, and results are never conclusive, only shelved until a new parameter comes along to refute them. In spite of this, my research has shown me a idea I would enjoy sharing with you.

The comic book movie. Do you know someone who sees them all? Are you that someone? Why do we continually respond to this particular stimulus?

:Query:

Have you seen it yet? If so, why have you committed yourself to the inevitable trilogy it will become?
Honestly, could you place another comic book hero into the plot without too much trouble?

:Statement:

Don't get me wrong. The culture of tradition is an important, if not absolutely necessary practice for humanity. The idea of good triumphing over evil will always be part of the collective sub/conscious.
Not to mention the need for a mindless form of entertainment after a week of toil.

:Hypothesis:

The culture of tradition is oftentimes mistaken for, or replaced by, the culture of passivity. Mass groups gather to observe a select few engage in an act. Mass passive vicariousness. Why play football on Sunday when it can be seen from the couch? Why make music when the concert is coming to town next week? Why live when we can watch others live imaginary lives for us on a screen?
Many traditions share a similar experience of an acute attunement of the senses. In some churches it is known as "Holy Spirit", in Japan it is known as "Zen", in ghetto cultures of America it is known as "Feelin it, Going off, etc". A symptom of this state is a complete disregard or unawareness of vacuous ideas, a lack of concern for the impression one is making.
Humanity used to only have pools of water. Now we have television, radio, and internet to mirror ourselves. It's hard to maintain a natural visage when you have so many mediums reflecting to you what you perceive to be your flaws. Take a look through Myspace or Facebook sometime and see the incredible amount of preening, posing, and posturing it takes for a person to be satisfied with one picture.
Make your own history.

Word. I think that many of our emotional and financial woes exist because of our need to live this celebrity lifestyle driven entirely by what we have and what we look like. Which is why no one is happy with the way they look or what they have. But everyone seems completly content with living outside thier means in order to portray a certain lifestyle. Which is why there are so many SUV's on the road despite the rediculous price of gas and homes being forclosed upon. And I won't even start on our inabilty to respect each other. Damn, we really are going to sound like a couple old coots over a checkerboard. Hah!
